An incident involving drunken teenage litter-louts at a Midhurst beauty spot could result in prosecutions.
Chichester District Council was told any evidence produced would be considered by officers.

The issue was raised by Midhurst representative Cllr Brian Weekes, who said the incident involved young hooligans at South Pond.

They were drunk, and fi
lling empty beer cans and bottles with water and hurling them at ducks.

The cans and bottles were left floating in the pond.

"I have some photographic evidence myself," Cllr Weekes added. "There was the usual absence of the police, and the police community support
officer seems to have completely disappeared.

"If firm evidence was brought to the council concerning these culprits, would it be able to take action against them over litter-dropping?

"Has this council ever taken action against anyone for litter -dropping."

Council solicitor Mike Kelley said any evidence produced would be examined by officers.

Cllr Derek James, community safety portfolio holder, said that the council was currently in negotiations over establishing community wardens in the Midhurst area.

"We hope to have at least one in place by next month," he added.

"This will do something towards stopping anti-social behaviour – community wardens do tremendous work in preventing this kind of thing."

Health portfolio holder Cllr Heather Caird said the incident reported by Cllr Weekes would encourage people in Midhurst to support the initiative the council had been trying to develop for the town and surrounding areas.

As far as littering was concerned, evidence of this was needed, and she hoped the council would be able to get it.
